Interview with Emmanuel M Arriaga, author of Foundra

What can you tell us about your new release, Foundra?

Foundra is a sci-fi coming of age story following a young genius named Neven. Neven has a perfect life before he meets up with the immortal Lanrete. Overnight, he goes from a comfortable life in the lab to fighting to save the galaxy from annihilation by extra-dimensional beings. He’s forced to become a Secnic, or combat engineer, where he operates massive power armors on the front lines alongside an elite team of heroes from across the galaxy. Neven learns to kill and discovers that he’s remarkably good at it, but that reality weighs on him even as the galaxy is crumbling to pieces around him.

What books are currently on your night stand?

I’m currently reading through “Fall” by Neal Stephenson. I recently finished “The Mistborn Trilogy” and am patiently awaiting the final book of “The Expanse” series.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Don’t let fear guide your decisions. Read up on the work of Carol Dweck and pick up the books “Mindset” and “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” as soon as they become available.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

I’d spend more time working on my novels. My wife and I have an infant son who takes up a good chunk of my time nowadays. My writing time has been cut moderately which has delayed some of my novel plans.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

My family and my faith. The relationships and community are a core part of who I am and have made me a better person and a better writer.

What scene in Foundra was your favorite to write?

There is an epic space battle that takes place later in the novel where Lanrete’s military forces are up against seemingly impossible odds to protect this planet filled with civilians. It’s this very tense moment where the characters realize they won’t be able to save everyone, but they go in with high hopes that they can turn the tide of the battle. It was a very emotional section for me to write and I think it may hit a few readers in the same way.

The Story Behind A Kiss to Keep by Willow Winters

By Willow Winters

A Kiss to Keep is one of my favorites that I’ve written because it’s set in this very intense world, with known dangers that are a given in the mafia setting, yet the conflict is so very relatable.

The Merciless world has been developed over ten novels now, so I know it well, and I love every fine detail just as much as I love all of the characters within this world. There are constant moving pieces and development for other heroes’ stories within the timeline which makes it more difficult to write and even to conceive, but also more enticing. I love the challenges and the depth that writing in this world brings.

The conflict between Sebastian and Chloe is one as old as time. They love each other, but the environment and the circumstances puts them at odds. I love the push and pull and… if I’m being honest, all the little sexy bits. I hope you fall in love with their story, this world, and become as obsessed as I am.

THE GUY ON THE RIGHT by KATE STEWART

Loved this! Ahhh the romance!

We met at the same crossroads and that, in and of itself, makes her valuable to me as a friend more than anything else.’

We love Kate Stewart, so we were beyond excited to pick up The Guy on the Right. This is one of those times we can say that hand on heart this book is exactly what it claims to be, a true friends to lovers romance. It is without question one of our favourites in this trope. What we loved about it was that it was all about the characters, it was ‘simple’ in story yet at the same time it packed such a strong punch because in its simplicity pure magic was achieved. It never felt over-written or over-dramatic, rather, it felt easy and flawless. It felt real, specifically in its honesty of friendship and romance.

We cannot explain how much we loved Laney and Theo, both were written with such care and attention to detail, that we felt we knew them almost from the get-go. Their insecurities, their hang-ups, their hopes, and their dreams. Their needs, desires, and wants. We understood their friendships and their relationships. What we especially loved about these two characters is the shift from what is considered the ‘norm’ in romance novels. Kate Stewart gave us a male character that was portrayed in such a manner that we recognised him, not from other novels but from real life.

THE TIP-OFF (Smart Jocks #3) by REBECCA JENSHAK

“You are beautiful. Not in spite of the scars, but because of them.”

We absolutely love this college sports romance series. Every book so far has been a winner for us and we just knew Zeke and Gabby’s book was going to be super special! Whilst each book can be read as a standalone we highly recommend a series binge if you’ve not read any yet. This series is so good! The romances are slow burn and there’s the college sports theme. The humour, camaraderie and banter is spot on and the emotional angst is on point. Rebecca Jenshank wrote another blinder in The Tip-Off.

Zeke and Gabby’s love story was so sweet and tender, yet funny and full of chemistry too. The slow burn was quite delicious and it felt true to the characters, right through till the end. Relationships built on mutual respect, friendship and of course an intense attraction is always going to be what true love is made of. It was so lovely to be back with the gang again as we really have taken them all into our hearts. The Tip-Off had real beauty in it too, with a wonderful message from both Zeke and Gabby, who in their own individual way were hiding from the parts of life that make it one crazy emotional ride.

Interview with Joseph E. Henning, Author of Adaptively Radiant

What can you tell us about your new release, Adaptively Radiant?

Adaptively Radiant is a fast paced, adventure packed supernatural tale of discovery and exploration that blends aspects of culture and mythology into a modern fairy-tale. The novel was inspired by city life versus island life experiences blended with my youthful passion for nature, folklore, and big adventure storytelling.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

One day in early 2018, I decided a 15-year career in mortgage lending and real estate had run its course. So, I grabbed a pen and blank journal, plopped a beach chair down in the sand, and began writing down my thoughts for a story. I told myself, “Fill this journal full of ideas and see what you can come up with.” One month later, the journal was full, the following month I organized the story into a writing program, and nine months after that the manuscript was complete. I guess you can say the inspiration came from within. I believe in myself.

What’s on your top 5 list for the best books you’ve ever read?

Red Dragon by Thomas Harris ranks very high on my all-time list. The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are masterpieces. My top reads this summer are The Silent Patient, Three Days Missing, and Sometimes I Lie.

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

M. Night Shyamalan. Even though his work is mostly screen plays vs novels, the storytelling is legendary. I would ask him, “What inspires you to keep creating supernatural thrillers after all of your success? Did you have a mentor in your early days?”

What’s your favorite thing about writing?

The freedom of speech. Cliché? Probably, but it’s the truth. To creatively write and share literature with the world is priceless.

What is a typical day like for you?

After a warm shower and a cup of coffee or tea, I nestle into research and writing for approximately 5-6 hours. Weekends are left open to beach activities and reading.

What scene in Adaptively Radiant was your favorite to write?

The story has nine separate magical encounters and each one of these were very special for me to write. They include specific, hand selected mystical beings and entities from traditional Japanese, Hawaiian, and Native American folklore. But if you want to know my favorite, it would have to be Chapter 11 – Kalalau Beach.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I wrote Adaptively Radiant with one motto in mind. “Write something meaningful”
