BEARD WITH ME (Winston Brothers #5.5) by PENNY REID

5 emotional and heartbreaking stars!

‘It felt so good. It felt more than good. It felt like the beginning of something terrible and beautiful and dangerous and wonderful.’

This was the story we always wanted but were in no way prepared for. We were rendered speechless breathed in with every word. Although acutely painful, it still maintained the warmth and wit synonymous with Penny Reid’s stories. The Winston’s with their quirks and quick tempers exude the family loyalty and love that continually steals a little more of our hearts with each book.

This agonisingly heartbreaking story harboured a pain that spanned nearly twenty years and was a difficult story to read. We can only surmise the pain the author went through bringing this story to life, and we applaud her for telling it in all its raw, gritty, ugly and beautiful glory. Billy Winston – this boy – he made us believe that not all hero’s wear capes. He was written to perfection.

CHERRY BEATS by VICKI JAMES

5 Stars! You HAVE to read this book! A 2019 favourite, and up there as of our favourite Rockstar Reads of all time!

“Nothing tells you what a girl really wants to say like the song she’s begging you to listen to.”
“Don’t forget what this journey is about: the music, Presley. Always the music.”

Cherry Beats is THE rock star romance we have been searching for to satisfy our need for the real world of rock music, the raw emotions, the feeling of being in a packed stadium audience reverently banging our heads and belting out much-loved rock songs…out of tune of course. Cherry Beats is everything and Vicki James nailed it. The rock scene isn’t pretty, it isn’t all fun and fluff. Its highs can be equally matched with its low’s. It can be as dark as it can be bathed in a spotlight of adoration. It’s as filled with as much angst and self-doubt as it is filled with overwhelming joy and self-satisfaction.

In our opinion, the balance to get a rock star romance spot on is like walking a tightrope, this Author danced all over that tightrope and made it her bitch. She gave us everything and more. In Cherry Beats, Vicki James wrote one of our favourite rock star romances, one which will go on the list of never forget. The writing was outstanding and we must have highlighted half the book, as our hearts were pulled back and forth by truths, analogies, heartbreak, love, self-searching and the utter despair and exhilaration of achieving childhood dreams. And of course -the music- always the music.

PAINT IT BLACK (Beneath the Stain #2) by AMY LANE

5 emotional and unforgettable stars!

"You gonna let me in?"
"Yeah."
"All the way in? Into your heart?"

You can't imagine how thrilled we were to hear Amy Lane had written Blake and Cheever's story. We were excited and maybe a little worried, from an emotional perspective, to return to the rock star household, and thrilled to be spending more time with this family.

Amy Lane once again delivered a painful and difficult story driven by raw emotion and a beautiful love story at its heart. This is a tender and sincere account of two men each warring with their demons and whose hearts cried out for the other. There were times we found ourselves grinning from the witty banter, and times we felt our hearts crash and soar, and moments that reduced us to tears.

Nothing in Blake and Cheevers story is superfluous; every page gave us much insight into Blake, Cheever and the Sanders clan. Every tender, heartbreaking, sweet, funny and moving moment was savoured then locked away, into our hearts for safekeeping.

THE FADEAWAY (Smart Jocks #2) by REBECCA JENSHAK

See our review for The Fadeaway and check out our Exclusive Excerpt from The Tip-Off, the third book in the fabulous Smart Jocks Series! We are LOVING this series!

“Why did you turn me down thirteen times?”
“Because you’re Joel Moreno.”

So, as you know we read The Assist, our first book by Rebecca Jenshak and had to jump straight into The Fadeaway! Whilst we really enjoyed the first book in this series falling in love with Wes and Blair, as well as the rest of the jocks, there really was something very special about Joel and Kitty’s story. It ticked all the boxes for us. The two jocks that intrigued us the most coming out of The Assist was Joel and Zeke. The cad and the silent giant. Both had us gagging for their story. So, of course, we jumped straight in and we were not disappointed! Whilst each book can be read as a standalone we absolutely recommend reading this series in order as there’s an overlapping storyline threaded through them. We’ve fallen in love with a new series and a new to us Author and now we eagerly await the third book which is our boy Zeke’s story. This is the best place to be as a reader!

RAPHAEL (Deadly Virtues #1) by TILLIE COLE

NOW LIVE! - 5 disturbing and compelling stars!!!

‘Now, they were all as dark as midnight, not a single star illuminating their godless worlds.’

Tillie Cole warned us this series was going to be dark….dark has nothing on this series. Where The Fallen was indeed heartbreakingly dark and disturbing, Raphael raised the stakes in its horrific black abyss of psychological terror and physical violence. We knew from the prequel that this book was going to break us -and it did- to the point where we at times had to stop reading, play a meditation video on YouTube and pop an anxiety pill in order to continue.

This is a classic example of books we almost reluctantly love and it all comes down to the quality of writing, the haunting and eerie atmosphere and the incredible emotions it elicits. Our hearts are already broken but we will be first in line for the next instalment in this journey.

LETTERS to MOLLY (Maysen Jar #2) by DEVNEY PERRY

‘Some mistakes were unforgivable. Some mistakes came with a regret that lived like a monster in your soul.’

Devney Perry has this unique ability of writing such beautiful stories with incredible heartfelt emotion and romance. Her style of writing is flawless, her stories enthralling and emotionally haunting at times. Her characters have real-life issues, trials, and tribulations but they all have that one important thing in common, soul mate love. It was heart-breaking in parts, funny in others and so incredibly sweet and romantic too.

Bravo, Devney Perry for writing what must’ve been a difficult story to write as it deals with the hardships faced in a marriage made with love. The external influencers, as well as the strain of a breakdown in communication, makes it hard; finding your way back is not easy. However, when the heart refuses any other, you must listen to its words!

THE REGRET DUET by ALY MARTINEZ

**5 Star Spoiler Free Duet Review**

“This hurts,” I croaked. “God, why does this hurt?”
“Because love is an impossible game. Especially when only one person knows the rules.”

What a story!! Absolutely brilliant! From the heart-stopping prologue through to the beautifully emotional finish, The Regret Duet by Aly Martinez held us captive on every single page! We were unable to move whilst devouring this clever, exquisitely written jaw-dropping story that was unlike anything we’ve read in some time. With every turn of the page, we became enthusiastically, nervously and ravenously enthralled by Aly Martinez’s superb storytelling and wonderful characters.

The twists, turns, shocks and surprises in this incredible and intense story will leave you breathless! Everything about this story was flawless in our eyes. There were times we wondered how in the hell Aly Martinez was going to deliver resolutions without it feeling forced, but she did and she did it splendidly and organically!

THE FRIENDS WE KEEP by JANE GREEN

‘Who do we have if we don’t have each other?’

The Friends We Keep by Jane Green is an epic story of life and a friendship cemented at University between three friends from different walks of life. We met Maggie, a sweet and naïve middle-class girl, Evvie an immigrant English-American former child actress and Topher an adorable American asexual lad. The friendship these three forge felt real and relatable. Each had their own story, hang-ups and dreams.

The angst level is extreme, the subjects covered heart-breaking and realistic. Tragedy, secrets and betrayals are rife, as a strong friendship is threatened by life, actions and personal emotions. The Friends We Keep goes full circle from University days till the characters are in their fifties. It shines a light on the fact that friends are the family you chose and that these bonds can be stronger than blood. The Friends We Keep is set in both the US and UK through the years which served as a character in its own right and we loved that aspect.
