Interview with Stephen Perkins, author of Grand Masquerade

What can you tell us about your new release, Grand Masquerade?

About my latest book release – Grand Masquerade – I would advise everyone to read while the lights are still on! The setting of the book is Rupert, a small and remote farming town, which happens to be haunted by supernatural entities, called the “Others”. Then, there is Richard Madden, a high-tech executive whose company, Morningstar, has developed Minerva, a surgically implantable mind-control application. Standing in the way of mass marketing this device, is presidential candidate Graham Barkley, who, at least publicly, stands opposed to Madden’s project, on the grounds that the device encroaches on constitutional privacy issues. Ostensibly, to settle their public dispute, Madden invites Barkley, along with his playboy young son, Caufield, on a hunting trip to the mountainous woodlands surrounding Rupert. Needless to say, while coming face to face with the “Others”, things don’t turn out exactly according to plan. Though Grand Masquerade is somewhat of a departure from my previous releases, loyal readers will be delighted to discover, the book still retains the familiar elements of both corporate and political intrigue as well as complex and treacherous conspiracies. Grand Masquerade even offers the element of romance. Madden’s son, Caufield, while involved in an investigation with the town sheriff into the mysteries of the “Others”, falls in love with Marigold, a local farm girl. Turns out though, unfortunately for young Caufield, Marigold is not what she appears to be! Undoubtedly, too, newer readers will become surprised and delighted to learn that Grand Masquerade will seem reminiscent of Steven King’s most vintage work. But, once again, I must caution them: Please, read Grand Masquerade while the lights are still on!

Your hosting a dinner party, which three writers are invited?

That is an intriguing question. Out of sheer curiosity, I would like, first, to invite Suzanne Collins, to ask her, why, she felt the need to write another sequel to the Hunger Games and, to ask her, about her reactions to the tens of thousands appearing to have reviewed the book, even though, the book has yet to be officially released to the public and, presumably, no one has yet read it? Does she consider this to be a rather curious phenomenon? Also, out of sheer curiosity, I would invite Stephanie Meyer, to not only enquire of her impressions of the cultural impact of “Twilight”, but, to ask, how she found the time, as a single mother of three children, to even write the book and the series of books which followed? And lastly, I would want to invite Thomas Harris. From that writer, I would hope to learn of his impressions: who is the greater villainous and evil psychopath – would it be Hannibal Lecter or Richard Madden, from Grand Masquerade? I would also wish to know, why , he may think the general public’s utter fascination with such depraved villains persists. I would also hope each of these writers brings over copious amounts of the most flavorful after-dinner coffee, to not only facilitate interesting and lively conversation, but, It seems, I have consumed so much of it this morning, my own personal supply has dwindled!

Which book from your childhood or teenage years has stuck with you as an adult?

‘A Christmas Carol’, from Charles Dickens. I can still recall becoming enchanted with the vividly drawn characters, the intrigue of the gothic setting and, of course, the story’s miracle redemption of Ebenezer Scrooge. To-this-day, the story seems both timeless and immortal.

Where is your happy place – what brings you joy?

I react with joy while imaging and looking towards the future. Despite everything, this is truly an exciting time to be alive!

What advice would you give to your teenage self?

Don’t take Wendy McManus, the varsity cheerleader from Bishop Fenwick to the senior prom, Steve. Though she’s blonde, with ravishing ice blue eyes, tall, beautiful and, though she may be irresistible in her long blue taffeta gown, she’s got issues, and you’ll regret it!

What scene in Grand Masquerade was your favorite to write?

You’ve posed a challenging question; one that is difficult to answer, especially considering, I had such fun while writing every exciting scene the readers can expect to encounter in Grand Masquerade. If, however, I had to choose but one, I would cite the scene which occurs half-way through Chapter 9. In this scene, Madden’s son, Caufield, journeys deep into Rupert’s mountainous and mysterious forests with Marigold. There, not only do they run into the “Others”, but, they end up facing a pulse-pounding ‘life or death’ scenario. After reading that, I can guarantee, ever reader of Grand Masquerade will want to switch on the lights, and leave them on for the remainder of the book?

FORTUITY (Transcend #3) by JEWEL E ANN

5 incredible stars!!! **NOW LIVE**

‘This girl. She’s life. She pumped my heart when I didn’t think it could keep beating. She filled my lungs when I thought I’d taken my last breath. She crawled up my face and showed me I still had a smile.’

Fortuity by Jewel E Ann was mesmerising, compelling, addictive and had everything we love in our romance. This is a story of second chances and living with grief and heartbreak. It’s about family connections, strength in adversity and love. So much about love. Jewel E Ann is a magnificent Author who grabs your heart and doesn’t let go until the last word on the last page. It’s a marathon and a journey of emotions where by the end you feel an exhausted sense that every word and every action got you to the finish line feeling an overwhelming sense of joy and satisfaction. Interview with Hep Aldridge, Author of Revelations: Sunken Treasure Lost Worlds

What can you tell us about your new release, Revelations: Sunken Treasure Lost Worlds?

Revelations picks up where Sunken Treasure Lost worlds ends. It is the second book in the Sunken Treasure Lost Worlds trilogy. Colt and the Risky Business Team find themselves confronted by new challenges and adversaries in their search for the Golden Library in Ecuador and the 1715 galleon off Florida’s Space Coast. Their discoveries only lead to more perplexing questions and unbelievable revelations. On their journey they find new allies in the most unlikely places. Danger confronts them and challenges their survival skills; they find themselves not knowing whom they can trust.

What books are currently on your nightstand?

Right now, there are two. Stephen King – On Writing and J. Frank Dobie – Coronado’s Children. Along with a scratch pad for Risky Business book 3 notes.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Pay attention in English class! I have developed a knack for storytelling but when it comes to putting stories on paper, that is a different thing. My writing skills require continual maintenance and upgrading! Writing has never been my strong suit and I sorely regret not mastering it at an earlier age.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

Reading for pleasure. I have always loved to read but now between life’s challenges and my writing, when I read it is more for research than pleasure. Having said that, I will admit writing about things that you love and are truly interested in makes the research less of a chore than it could be.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

Music! I love music, all kinds. If I am working outside, I always have music playing. When I write, I have music playing, only instrumental not vocals. New Age, classical, epic. The internet has an endless supply of music that helps me focus, inspires me and adds to my creative moments. Music says something to my soul. It can make me smile, bring joy to my heart, a tear to my eye and transport me to unbelievable places.

What scene in Revelations: Sunken Treasure Lost Worlds was your favorite to write?

That is hard to answer, I have a couple. The first chapter was very interesting to put together and plan how to ultimately tie it into the storyline. The smugglers confrontation was exciting and took an unexpected turn. The galleon scene toward the end of the book was technically challenging but fun. And who doesn’t like a good barroom brawl! I know you only asked for one, but asking a writer that question is like asking a person, which one of those potato chips in that bag did you like the best…

Interview with Lisa Slater, Author of For the Garden

What can you tell us about your new release, For the Garden?

For the Garden is an intriguing mixture of mystery and suspense that’ll leave you wondering if communicating over the gap of death is possible and have you guessing if Sarina Rose is only imagining that she’s helping her dead twin sister solve her fifteen-year-old murder, or if they’re onto something. Something dangerous.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

Being heard. In a sea of voices desperate to be heard, writing is a way of whispering all of your bottled-up stories, and maybe a few life lessons, into those crashing waves and have them whisper back to you, “I heard you… and I loved it.”

What’s on your top 5 list for the best books you’ve ever read?

This made me laugh. What a terrible question to ask a reader. Nearly every book is my favorite… until the next one. It really depends on the subject and an even more frail thing – my mood. For a ready to kick butt mood, I loved The Woman Left Behind, by Linda Howard, or Chasing Fire, by Nora Roberts. To fall backwards into time, I loved Stranger’s Dance, by Troy B. Kechely, or Chase the Wind, by Cindy Holby. I’ve never been disappointed by Nicholas Sparks, Jude Deveraux, or Stephen King. There’s never a wrong book. Just the wrong mood.

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Wowzers. Alrighty, let’s assume I’ve got enough talk and skills to host a literary talk show. Aw man, you guys are going to hate this. I would invite either an avid reader or maybe even someone who hates reading at all. I would want to ask:

“What about a story makes it most interesting to you?”

“If your mother wasn’t listening right now, what are you craving to read? Particularly what are you hungry for that’s not being written?”

“What rules do you want to see broken? What are you sick of?”

“If you could become anyone or anything, who or what would you be?”

What’s your favorite thing about writing?

Writing is both exciting and relaxing as a story transpires. However, it’s after the completion that’s my favorite time. I love receiving reader’s stories of their journey through my “baby” (my story), all grown up and bound between two beautiful covers. Did someone experience bounding joy and hysterical laughter? I hope so. Did someone curse me for ripping their heart in two (figuratively, of course), or for all the weird stares they got at work with bloodshot eyes after staying up to read “a little more… a little more… damn it, I have to know!”? I hope so.

What is a typical day like for you?

On a writing day, I wake up super excited and content that I’ve committed that day to doing something so enjoyable. I sit down at my computer with a cup of coffee and begin. Hours go by, undisturbed by anything except the ever-rolling process of laundry (and another beverage). Laundry provides an opportunity to stretch my legs and allows my imagination a chance to ponder and dream without the pressure of feeling the need to type it out. When I sit back down, I’m usually refreshed and ready to continue. My family typically returns from school or work long before I’m ready to shut my laptop and start making dinner. So goes life. But stopping before I’m ready provides a great opportunity to pick up tomorrow, lull free.

What scene in For the Garden was your favorite to write?

In For the Garden my favorite parts to write were involving Sarina’s friend, Becky Bracken. She’s a crack up and I loved writing her as much as I hope everyone loves getting to know her. My second favorite part was wrapping up the ending. Oh, it nearly stitched itself together for me, which is sweet gift I don’t take for granted. I just had to follow its lead. That’s what happens when your “baby” grows up and starts making decisions for itself.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Oh yes. A few. The first and most freeing thing I started living by was this: “Relax, you’re not born knowing everything. It takes a lifetime to learn just something.”

It’s the second thing I realized that my husband and I give credit to for most of my joy and success (except for hubby himself). “Everything good that happens to me happens when I go outside of my comfort bubble.” We’ve been living by it ever since. It’s still true.

And don’t forget, thank God. Literally. Thank Him.
